The alleged shoplifting occurred Friday, April 19 at 6:44 p.m. at Winged Monkey at 384 Post Road East where police were called, said Westport Police.

Store staff reportedly relayed that a woman who was recently in the store removed a number of items from it without paying for them, according to police.

The total value of this stolen merchandise was estimated by staff who gave a description of the woman to police and video surveillance footage that captured the alleged incident, police said.

An investigation led to the alleged suspect, Dawn Diaz and photo lineups of witnesses confirmed her identity, according to the Westport Police Department.

Diaz was arrested on a warrant obtained from the witness statements and positive identification said police.

Attempts to contact and locate Diaz in order to serve this outstanding warrant were unsuccessful, Westport Police said.

On Tuesday, July 9 at approximately 10:30 p.m. a bail enforcement agent responded to police headquarters with Diaz in custody, according to police.

Computer checks conducted of Diaz at that time also confirmed that Diaz had an active warrant for her arrest for first-degree failure to appear stemming from an original arrest by the Fairfield Police Department for felony charges in which she did not appear in court as scheduled, said police.

Based on the Westport investigation Diaz was charged with third-degree larceny and bond was set at $15,000, according to Westport Police.

For the additional charge carried by the outstanding failure to appear warrant, a bond had been court-set at $5000, police said.

She reportedly was unable to post these bonds and was arraigned at Norwalk Superior Court on Tuesday, July 17.
